The Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) allows a parent, legal guardian, or eligible relative to stay in Australia as the guardian of an international student under 18 (or over 18 in exceptional circumstances). This visa ensures the student has appropriate care and support while studying in Australia.

- Accompany an international student under 18 years old studying in Australia.
- Stay for the same duration as the student visa holder or until the student turns 18.
- No work rights, but you may study an English language course or another course for up to 3 months.
Who Can Apply?
You may be eligible for the Student Guardian Visa if you are:
- A parent, legal custodian, or relative (e.g., grandparent, sibling, aunt/uncle) of the student.
- Over 21 years old.
- Able to provide evidence of support, accommodation, and welfare arrangements for the student.
- Do not bring dependent children unless they are under 6 years of age, and you can justify exceptional circumstances.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for this visa, you must:
- Be the nominated guardian by the student's education provider.
- Provide evidence of relationship to the student.
- Have sufficient financial capacity to support yourself and any dependents during your stay.
- Hold adequate health insurance (Overseas Visitors Health Cover – OVHC).
- Meet health and character requirements.
- Intend to stay temporarily in Australia to provide care and support only.
Visa Duration
- The visa is generally granted for the same duration as the student's visa or until the student turns 18 — whichever comes first.
