Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)

The Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) is part of Australia’s Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program, designed for young adults who want to holiday and work in Australia to help fund their stay.

Extension: Second and Third 417 Visas

You can apply for a:

  • Second 417 visa after completing 3 Months (88 days) of specified work in regional Australia during your first stay.
  • Third 417 visa after completing 6 months (179 days) of specified work during your second visa.
  • You can be inside or outside Australia.

Eligible work includes:

  • Plant and animal cultivation
  • Fishing and pearling
  • Tree farming and felling
  • Mining
  • Construction
  • Bushfire recovery work
  • Natural Disaster Recovery Work

Work must be paid and comply with Australian employment laws.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply, you must:

  • Be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) — or 18 to 35 if you're from specific countries.
  • Hold a valid passport from an eligible country. Some eligible countries include:Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, and the UK.
  • Apply from outside Australia.
  • Not have previously entered Australia on a subclass 417 or 462 visa.
  • Have sufficient funds, generally about AUD 5,000 plus a return airfare or additional funds to purchase one.
  • Meet health and character requirements.
  • Have no dependent children accompanying you.

What You Can Do on a 417 Visa

  • Work:
    ● Take up short-term or casual employment to support your travels.
    ● No limit on work type, but you can usually work for one employer for up to 6 months.
  • Study: You can study or train for up to 4 months (17 weeks).
  • Travel: Travel freely in and out of Australia while the visa is valid.
  • Stay duration: Up to 12 months from the date you first enter Australia.
